4 Things All Pet Owners Need To Know About Vaccinations

Posted on

No matter what type of domestic pet you have, there's a good chance there are specific vaccinations recommended by your vet to keep your pet safe. For example, most dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies once every year or every three years (depending on the vaccine used). Keeping your pet up-to-date on vaccinations helps to protect your pet's health, as well as the health and wellness of those around you.

As a pet owner, there are a few important facts you should know about pet vaccination services.

The Side Effects Are Minimal

Sometimes, pet owners are hesitant to have their pets vaccinated because they worry about side effects (especially in younger pets, such as kittens and puppies). In reality, however, pet vaccinations are extremely safe and side effects are usually minimal. Some pets, for example, may experience a little bit of lethargy for the first 12-24 hours after receiving a vaccine. The majority of pets, however, will not experience any adverse side effects at all.

They're Often Required

Pet owners should also be aware that certain vaccinations may not just be recommended by your vet; they may actually be required in some instances. For example, if you plan on bringing your dog into a dog park or boarding facility, you will likely be required to show proof of up-to-date vaccinations for the safety of staff and other animals in the facility. The same goes if you wish to bring your dog or cat in to be seen by a professional groomer.

Risk Factors Can Vary

Often times, pet owners aren't sure exactly which vaccines their pets need. There is no universal answer to this question, as each pet's risk factors are unique. An indoor cat, for example, will be at less risk of developing certain illnesses/diseases than an outdoor cat. Furthermore, certain breeds of dogs and cats may have a greater risk of developing certain diseases. Age can also play a role, so the best way to find out which vaccines your pet needs is to ask your vet.

Many Vets Offer Package Deals

To help make pet vaccinations more affordable, many vets offer package deals that include all your pet's annual vaccines, a wellness exam, blood work, and perhaps other veterinary services for one price paid yearly. This is a great option if you're looking for ways to save money on the preventative care services your pet needs.
